Safe Inside?
It’s been fifteen years since Hurricane Katrina, and about fifteen years since many New Orleans residents have thought about home safety beyond water damage. Whether you own your home or rent it, you should be on the look out for things that can make your home unsafe:
-Locks.
This may seem obvious, but it can be easy to overlook. If you’ve lost a house key or two recently, you should get your locks changed once you can. Your should also check on your spare key, and you should make sure it’s not kept somewhere obvious, like under the mat.
-Rodents.
A house cat may keep critters at bay, but if you are a tenant and you notice rats, you should notify your landlord A. S. A. P. Rodent infestations are a hazard that can make your home uninhabitable in the eyes of both the law and of the Center for Disease Control. If you own your house, that’s all the more reason to call an exterminator.
-Wobbling.
If railings, ceilings or other supports are unsecured or unable to bear a reasonable amount of weight, you probably already know you should be careful. If talking to your landlord is a hassle, this is still worth speaking to them about. (And if your talking to your landlord is a huge hassle, you may want to do that ‘speaking’ by email in order to have a proof that you tried.)
-Who do you call?
If you own a house, it can be hard to keep track of everything, especially who to call and when for help. Home Advisor and Habitat NOLA ave great reputations for local home maintenance. If you are a tenant, you always want to go to your land lord first. If you are a tenant and your landlord is refusing to fix serious problems in your residence, you may be entitled to compensation.
